Cholon - Stepping into the Past, a Journey to the Present!

Do you want to explore a destination that carries the breath of time? Join us on a visit to the historical land of Cholon in Saigon!

Cholon is the living place of the Chinese community in Saigon, and few people know that it has a history of over 300 years. So, how was Cholon formed?

Before 1698, De Ngan (later known as Cholon) had the Minh Huong village of the Chinese people - those who opposed the Qing Dynasty's migration to the South from China after being allowed by Lord Nguyen. They lived together with the Vietnamese people in this place. They dressed like the Vietnamese but spoke Cantonese, gathering in a village in the Tau Hu - Ben Nghe region under Phien Tran and Thanh Ha Xa under Tran Bien. At that time, the Chinese people entering the South split into two groups: one group lived in Minh Huong village, and the other group lived in Cu Lao Pho (present-day Bien Hoa). They turned their living place into the largest commercial center in the South.

Due to the increasing demand for trade and commodity exchange, one market was not enough, so the Chinese people here established a market for trading. Because this market was larger than the Tan Kieng Market in District 5 (which no longer exists now) of the Vietnamese, as well as being the largest market in the South at that time, the locals called it Cholon.

During the French colonial period, Cholon was a separate city from Saigon until it was merged in 1956. Since then, the name "Cholon" no longer exists officially in terms of administration, but it has become a cultural area spanning Districts 5, 6, and 11. In the early 20th century, the Chinese tycoon Quach Dam built Binh Tay Market (the new Cholon) about 2km away from the old Cholon to replace the deteriorating and war-damaged old Cholon. The old Cholon now serves as District 5's Post Office.

The new Cholon covers an area of about 25,000 square meters, several times larger than the old market, with octagonal architecture, 12 gates, and a spacious courtyard for visitors to rest. Inside the market, there are sculptures of dragons and tigers, and there is also an area for worship (according to Chinese culture), creating a nostalgic and peaceful atmosphere. (There are also many legends about the ghost of the great tycoon Quach Dam still lingering in this market).

The people of Cholon are known for their friendliness, politeness, and hospitality. They value family and respect the elderly. The people here are also dynamic, creative, and enthusiastic in business activities.

Due to its dense concentration and the rich culture of the Chinese-Vietnamese community, the area is often referred to as Chinatown in the heart of Saigon.

When visiting and traveling to Cholon, tourists not only get to admire Chinese architectural features such as temples, martial arts halls, and traditional medicine shops but also experience the atmosphere here and have the opportunity to purchase incredibly affordable items inside the market. Additionally, they can directly experience the "culinary paradise" of the Chinese people with authentic Chinese dishes such as Ha Cao, Hu Tieu, Pha Lau, and more.

Around the Cholon area, there are also many other places to visit and explore, such as the "St. Francis Xavier Parish Church," Kim Bien Market, Fabric Market, and District 5 Post Office.
