Overview

BAC LIEU PROVINCE

Bac Lieu city, the intersection of the three cultures Vietnamese - Chinese - Khmer attracts tourists from everywhere thanks to the characteristics of ancient architecture and is the birthplace of the famous song "Da Co Hoai Lang", also a land associated with fascinating anecdotes about the Prince of Bac Lieu.

Geographical location

Bac Lieu city has an area of 17,538.19 hectares, the east borders Vinh Chau district (Soc Trang province), the west borders Hoa Binh district, the south borders the East Sea, the north and northwest borders Vinh Loi district.

Bac Lieu city has 10 commune-level administrative units, including 7 wards and 3 communes, divided into 67 hamlets.

History

On December 20, 1899, the Governor General of Indochina signed a decree to remove the title of the district and change it to a province, and a ward to change it to a district. The administration of Bac Lieu province is located in Vinh Loi village, Vinh Loi district.

On December 18, 1928, the Governor General of Indochina established the towns of Bac Lieu, Can Tho, Rach Gia and My Tho under the provinces of the same name.

The revolutionary government separated two villages Vinh Loi and Vinh Trach to establish Bac Lieu town under Bac Lieu province. In 1957, the Western Union Provincial Party Committee dissolved Bac Lieu province and transferred Bac Lieu town to Soc Trang province for management.

In November 1973, the Southwest Party Committee decided to re-establish Bac Lieu province, Bac Lieu town again belonged to Bac Lieu province until early 1976.

In February 1976, Minh Hai province was established on the basis of two provinces of Bac Lieu and Ca Mau. Bac Lieu town changed its name to Minh Hai town and was the provincial capital of Minh Hai province from 1976-1984.

On May 17, 1984, Minh Hai town changed its name to Bac Lieu town, belonged to Minh Hai province.

On November 6, 1996, Minh Hai province was split into two provinces, Ca Mau and Bac Lieu, Bac Lieu town became the provincial capital of Bac Lieu province.

On August 27, 2010, Bac Lieu city was established on the basis of the natural area and population of Bac Lieu town.

Climate – Terrain

Bac Lieu is located in the tropical monsoon climate, the weather is divided into two distinct seasons: the dry season starts from October - November of the previous year to April - May of the following year; The rainy season starts from April - May to October - November. The average annual temperature is 28.5oC, the lowest temperature of the year is 21oC (rainy season), the highest temperature of the year is 36oC (dry season).

The terrain of Bac Lieu city is relatively flat and low with many ponds, lakes and shrimp ponds that are favorable for agricultural production development.

Rivers

In the area of Bac Lieu city, there is Bac Lieu river, canal 30-4,... supplying water for agricultural and aquaculture activities and drainage in urban areas.

Natural resources

The suburbs of Bac Lieu city (Hiep Thanh commune and Nha Mat ward) have a diverse ecosystem, in which three dominant mangrove species including: Rhizophora apiculata, Bruguirea parviflora and Avicennia alba. It is home to many animals such as birds, shrimp and saltwater fish.

Forest

Bac Lieu city has about 557 ha of forest, accounting for 2.61% of the total natural area, of which the main part is coastal protection forest (about 434 ha), mainly concentrated in Vinh Trach Dong, Hiep Thanh commune and Nha Mat ward. In addition to the coastal protection forest area, Bac Lieu city has a Bac Lieu bird garden located in the special-use forest.

Sea

Bac Lieu city has 12.5 km of coastline with diverse ecosystems, rich in species with over 600 species of fish, 33 species of shrimp and many types of molluscs. Many types of seafood have large reserves and high economic value such as: shrimp, snapper, goby, starfish, mackerel, pompano, bronze croaker... The intertidal zone is a breeding area for bivalves such as clams, scallops, etc.

The city has 30/4 canal opening to the East Sea, creating favorable conditions for the construction of fishing ports and storm shelters.

Tourism potential

Bac Lieu city is home to many cultural-historical relics and scenic spots such as the Southern Don Ca Tai Tu art memorial area and Cao Van Lau musician, Nha Mat tourist area, Bac Lieu bird sanctuary, longan garden tourist area, Prince of Bac Lieu's Mansion, Quan Am Phat Dai Tourist Area, Wind Power Plant, Xiem Can Pagoda, Vinh Duc Pagoda, Imperial Citadel of Ancient Temple (Minh Pagoda), Ho Nam Eco-tourism Area, Ancient Sundial...

The city is also the place where many traditional festivals take place such as: Da Co Hoai Lang, Quan Am Nam Hai, Ky Yen, Lantern, Grave-visiting, Chol Chnam Thmay (traditional Khmer New Year festival), Ook Om Bok (Moon worshiping ceremony of Khmer)…

Traffic

Bac Lieu city is 280 km from Ho Chi Minh City. Visitors can choose many means of transportation such as motorbikes, cars, coaches or airplanes to Bac Lieu.

+ By air: It takes about 1 hour from Tan Son Nhat to Ca Mau airport by plane, then about 63km by car from Ca Mau airport along National Highway 1A to Bac Lieu city.

+ By car: From Saigon to Bac Lieu takes about 6 hours

+ By motorbike: it's better to choose the route along National Highway 1A, through Tien Giang, Vinh Long to Bac Lieu.
