HISTORY
This area has been inhabited since ancient times thanks to convenient transportation along the Red and Chay rivers. Several archaeological excavations in the province have uncovered ancient temples and other sites. Stone tools were excavated in Mu Cang Chai district. In 1285, the Thu Vat battle took place under the command of Tran Nhat Duat against the Mongols at Thac Ba Lake.
Vietnam gradually became a French colony from 1859 to 1883. Initially, military resistance against French rule took place through the Can Vuong movement led by Ton That Thuyet and Phan Dinh Phung to find a way to put the boy Emperor Ham Nghi at the head of an independent nation. Nation. However, with Phung's death in 1895, military opposition practically ended. The only notable incident after this event that occurred in 1917 was the uprising in Thai Nguyen. The lack of military activity changed in the late 1920s with the formation of the VNQDD, or Vietnamese Nationalist Party. VNQDD attempted covert operations to undermine French rule, leading to French surveillance of their activities. This led to their leadership group risking organizing a large-scale military attack on the Red River Delta in Northern Vietnam. Only on February 10, 1931, was the VNQD able to coordinate with civilian supporters to launch the Yen Bai mutiny, an uprising by Vietnamese soldiers in the French colonial army. Therefore, Yen Bai was the place where the first battle took place in the First Indochina War. Yen Bai and Thai Yugyen were key military posts of the Viet Minh, and China provided weapons to fight the French in this war.
