Saigon is an amazing mix of cultures. Founded over fifteen centuries ago, it didn’t become an important city until the arrival of Vietnamese settlers from the north in the 17th century. Colonisation by the French 200 years later saw a European influence that lasted some hundred years. Independence came via two long and bloody wars that also left their mark.

Hop back on the bus and head for the Skydeck, in the heart of the city’s modern financial district. 49 floors above the city, this is the perfect vantage point to see Saigon and appreciate its remarkable mix of the old and the new. Nha Rong Wharf is another great hop-off choice. Located on the banks of the Saigon River, the pier gives you an insight into another side of the city. Like so many other cities, Saigon owes its existence to the river and it’s still an important and colourful part of local life today. It’s also the location of the Ho Chi Minh Museum, dedicated to the life of the Vietnamese leader who gave the city its other name.
